About the Liberal Arts Honors Program
THE LIBERAL ARTS HONORS PROGRAM
was founded in 2012, and since then has awarded Liberal Arts Honors to over 100 outstanding undergraduates upon their commencement. Our students have excelled in many ways—presenting at conferences, winning awards and grants, going on to top graduate schools and law schools. Nine of our students have won top ten seniors honors at UTEP.
The success of LAHP students is rooted in their own capabilities. LAHP students are capable of doing great work—we recommend a 3.50gpa or higher to apply—and they want to get the most they can out of their education. LAHP students are ambitious and creative, eager to learn and to grow. If this sounds like you, we want you to apply.
If you apply to the LAHP and are accepted, we will work to provide you with as many tools and opportunities as possible to enhance your academic work and your experience at UTEP, and to prepare you for whatever comes next.
The LAHP is built on four pillars to provide you with these opportunities.
Scholarship:
The LAHP offers the only academic honors minor on campus. The minor includes special theory/methodology classes with fellow LAHP members, and the opportunity to complete a research project working one-on-one with a faculty mentor. It also includes the opportunity to take some of the best classes offered in Liberal Arts, and to work with some of the best faculty in Liberal Arts and at UTEP, and to count things like study abroad or away classes and internships taken for course credit towards the minor. Best of all, the LAHP minor is designed to fit into your existing degree plan. The LAHP minor isn’t about more work; it’s about better work.
Mentorship:
The LAHP offers you multiple layers of mentorship. The Director of the LAHP and the LAHP assistant will always be available to you. Almost every department and program in Liberal Arts has an LAHP liaison; the liaison in your department or program will also be available to mentor you. The faculty member overseeing your final honors project will also be your mentor. If you have questions, or need advice, we will be there to help you.
Professional (and if you’d like, Personal) Growth:
The LAHP partners with entities like the Office of Student Fellowships and Awards and the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Career Center, and with programs like the LSPI to help LAHP students get fellowships, scholarships and internships, and to help you think about graduate schools and career planning. The LAHP also has funds to help you study abroad or away, to deliver your work at academic or creative conferences, or to visit potential graduate schools. We also have an inter-disciplinary speakers’ series which brings leading thinkers and creators to UTEP (we also arrange lunches for you to meet them, and buy copies of their book for you!).
Community:
The LAHP offers classes that you take with other LAHP students. It has a lounge for LAHP students, with computers, printers and snacks and drinks. We hold meetings to introduce you to important offices on campus, or to guest speakers, or just to hang out and eat.
THE LAHP is a great program, and we’re always looking for students who want to take advantage of what it has to offer. If this sounds like the program for you, please apply!
